The types range from 1 to 4 and then go into alphabet like 2a or 4b. You can even have a mix of each texture. When you were born you either had naturally curly hair, straight hair, or wavy hair. The amount of curl, wave, or lack thereof, is dependent on the number of disulfide bonds between hair proteins found in the hair shaft; the greater the number of links, the curlier the hair, and the fewer the number of links, the straighter the hair. So what does that mean? It means that each strand of hair is a chain, the smaller the link in the chain the curlier, the larger the links in the chain the straighter.
So how can you identify your hair?? Well here you go….
TYPE 2: WAVY HAIR
Description:
• Soft or deep waves and little to no curl
• Coarse and stays close to the scalp in long "s" shaped curves
• Doesn't usually have a lot of body
A, B, C
Type A for wavy hair can easily alternate between straight and curly styles, while type B and C wavy hair is resistant to styling.
A = fine and soft
B = medium textured
C = coarse, thick and frizzy
Type 2
Invest in a good boar bristle brush to keep your waves smooth, use light moisturizing hair gel to add definition to your waves, and deep condition regularly and use a moisturizing leave-in. Type 2 hair is also prone to frizz so it would be a great idea to use an anit-frizz/humidity protective product.
Type 3: Curly Hair
Description:
• Fine and soft “s” shaped pattern and sometimes even a “z” pattern.
• Doesn’t have a lot of sheen
• Has lots of body
• Straightens when wet and curls when dried
A, B, C
A = Curls are naturally big, loose and usually very shiny
B = Medium amount of curl, from bouncy ringlets to tight corkscrews.
C = smaller curls almost like kinky waves.
Type 3
Care Tips & Products
It’s very important that Type 3 hair use wide tooth combs to avoid breakage. This hair can become tangled so a detangler product should be used. It’s also important to use a deep conditioner every shampoo and also use a leave in conditioner. To avoid fuzz don’t brush your hair and try not to towel dry your hair. Use a blow dryer with diffuser or air dry. A lot of people would say use the dryer on medium heat; however, I would think that the faster you get your hair dry the less heat you have to use. So I recommend using high heat to avoid exposure to heat for too long. Products like custards, creams, and butters work well on Type 3 hair.
Type 4: Coily/Kinky Hair
Description:
• Very tightly curled almost wiry
• Driest of all types
• Most fragile of all the types
A, B, C
A = looser 'coil'. Strands have a spiral shape
B & C = tighter 'kink'. Strands have a zig-zag shape like the letter "z".
Type 4
Care Tips & Products
To keep Type 4 hair healthy and strong, use a moisturizer daily. It’s also important to use a wide tooth comb, your fingers, or a pick when detangling hair and make sure that the hair completely covered in conditioner during this time. Use a deep conditioner every time after shampooing. It’s best to use butters, creams, and oils on this type of hair.
Bottom line, you’re hair in a natural state is super fragile. It’s important to care for it gently and be attentive. If you pay close attention your hair will speak to you no matter the type. Watch the signs, if your scalp itches that means it’s thirst and in need of oil. It’s important to know your hair type so you know how to properly care for it. Though it’s important to experiment with different products knowing your type will eliminate you wasting money on products that won't be effective.
So that’s all I have for now! I’ll be back real soon with some more information!!
